Michael Morpurgo’s beautiful novel tells the story of Joey and Albert. As World War One breaks out Joey, Albert’s beloved horse, is sold by his father, and shipped to France where he is caught up in an extraordinary journey that finds him on both sides of the fighting. Albert remains on the family farm in Devon, too young to volunteer to fight, but unable to forget Joey he sets off to find him and bring him home safely.
The drama is brought to life by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company with life-size horses at the heart of the story and the heart of the stage. This production is directed by Tom Morris and Revival Director Katie Henry who have captured the love and determination of a young boy for his best friend.
Within moments, the audience have forgotten that they are watching puppeteer’s (Joey is portrayed by Tom Quinn as the head, Lewis McBean as the heart and Michael Larcombe as the hind), the stature and smallest movements combined to create the most detailed performance. There are audible gasps from the audience in some of the stories most dramatic moments and it is clear that the audience share Albert’s love for Joey.
Tom Sturgess plays Albert, from young farm boy to WW1 soldier his journey is delightfully played out in this robust performance as the audience shares Albert’s journey. His rapport with David, played by Ike Bennett, is touching and provides some nice uplifting moments.
This production is one for all ages to enjoy and to learn the true meaning of friendship and what lengths it can take us to.
