The Ugly Duckling : A Circus Story

We all know the story of that undiscovered swan who doesn't fit in, but why are we still using the word ugly? Shouldn't we be updating this story to be about belonging, and celebrating difference? A reimagining of the classic tale with an acrobatic twist comes to life this Christmas.

Revel Pucks’ ethos is to reject the spectacular body and embrace the body that does spectacular things, which is reflected beautifully in this piece. With actors able to take the stage as themselves without having to conform to the typical criteria of performers in theatre for young audiences, they showcase not only a wide variety of skills but of people. This seems to succinctly sum up the spirit of the Winter Festival as a whole, with diversity and inclusion at its heart.

Both the venue and audience inhabiting it were fully on board with this idea, as it really is art made accessible to all. The colourful mirrored tent offered a soothing sensory experience, and the flexible seating options meant everyone could independently choose an area that works best for them. Whether visiting as a family or flying solo, it is an incredibly welcoming environment with a brilliant selection of facilities to boot.

A small cast of 4 take us through an abbreviated and re-written version of the story with a combination of narration and circus extravaganza. The performer in the titular role of Lou gave great energy throughout, however seemed to struggle with projection at times. This may be due to the microphone quality or sound design, however, as she was not alone in this.

A more impressive technical department was that of colours and costume. Simple tie-dye denim bodysuits serve as the outfits for everyone, complete with black base layers and overcoats in times of multi-rolling.

The music choice also keeps us entertained and grounded in equal measure, with visual aspects timed perfectly alongside the tunes. These were a perfect mix of new and familiar tracks, and all shared a very chill vibe with a strong enough beat for us to bop along to. These songs were accompanied by performers on aerial silks, straps, slings, and rope like materials - all of which were phenomenal to watch.

Unfortunately the scenes linking these numbers together was where the weakness lies - the cast are clearly incredible athletes however perhaps not as strong or confident in their acting abilities. There was a notable loss of fluidity between the dialogue and each segment could've had smoother transitions. This is where the pace also seemed to falter, and was where the only moments of restlessness occurred.

If you or your little one are looking for a fun hour this chilly season, be warmed both physically and emotionally at The Revel Pucks rendition of The Ugly Ducking.
