It’s been just over 50 years since Richard O’Brien wrote The Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1973. A tribute to Science Fiction and Horror B movies, the show slowly gained the cult following it has today, with fans dressing up as the shows characters and an audience participation that is still evolving, (a word to the new audience members though; there is an actual audience script, so please remember that shout outs should not occur at inappropriate and more serious moments out of respect for the performers and other audience members).
For anyone that hasn’t seen it before, the story tells of two squeaky clean college kids, (Brad and Janet), who stumble across a creepy mansion one night when their car breaks down. Their meeting with Dr Frank N Furter leads to fun, frolics, and some seriously X-rated behaviour!
Who is Frank?
Where do Riff Raff and Magenta actually come from?
What is this crazy celebration they have walked into?
And how is this all going to end?
Adam Strong takes on the role of Frank N Furter and has some hilarious facial expressions to coincide with his strong vocal ability. Jackie Clune is the Narrator for this venue (this role is famously different from venue to venue), and she bats back any audience ad libs with aplomb and some seriously brilliant one liners, she is a terrific addition to the cast.
Connor Carson as Brad and Lauren Chia as Janet hold the story well and are vocally impressive. As are Job Greuter as Riff Raff who makes the role his own (die hard Rocky fans will be used to seeing Kristian Lavercombe in this role), it is a refreshing new take on the iconic character. Natasha Hoeberigs as Magenta and Jayme-Lee Zanoncelli as Columbia superbly complete Frank’s entourage.
Morgan Jackson as Rocky seems to be a fan favourite and his back flips add to a loveable and delightfully played character. Christopher Luscombe’s direction is flawless, as always and Nathan M Wright’s choreography delightful.
This production is yet again a masterpiece, a cult classic and a fantastic night out!
So, grab your stilettos, pull on your fishnets and get yourself down to the theatre for an astoundingly good night!
