The Brown Suite

I absolutely loved this show! Honestly, I don’t think I could have enjoyed it more.

The Brown Suite is beautifully told through dance, and that made it all the more special for me because I love a dance show. There is something about watching a story unfold through movement, music and choreography rather than words, and this production did that so incredibly well.

Set against the backdrop of 1970s New York, the story follows seven characters whose lives collide through friendship, romance, heartbreak and conflict, all brought together by an incredible soundtrack of James Brown, Etta James and Sam Cooke.  And honestly… the music!

It had that proper Motown/soul-era vibe, packed with funk, soul and so much life. The music, the choreography, the dancers and even the lighting all worked together so beautifully. I particularly loved how the lighting changed alongside the movement and music, it added a whole other layer to the performance and made some of the dance sequences even more spectacular.

The choreography was insanely creative. There were moments where I genuinely found myself just sitting there thinking, “wow.” The cast members I saw were absolutely sensational, and every single dancer brought something different to the stage.

Darius Drooh as Ray and Hugo Bragg as Julian were definitely two of my highlights. These two together were hilarious. Their chemistry was something else. They were completely in sync, bounced off each other brilliantly and genuinely looked like they were having the time of their lives.  They were definitely the scene stealers for me, but that absolutely doesn’t take away from the rest of the cast, because everyone brought something special in their own way.

Leilia Wright as Denise was particularly stunning. I was genuinely mesmerised watching her dance. She has such a beautiful presence on stage and I could have watched her dance all night.

Actually… that brings me to my only complaint.  The show wasn’t long enough!  I genuinely could have sat there watching these dancers all night. I was completely absorbed in the music, the movement and the energy of the whole production and I didn’t want it to end.

If you love dance, funk, soul or just watching ridiculously talented performers doing what they do best, I would absolutely recommend giving The Brown Suite a watch when it comes to a theatre near you.

I left the gala night with a massive smile on my face and honestly, I could have happily stayed for another few hours!
