Welcome to the post office where it’s the busiest time of year! The letters are piling up high and Rosie Robin is working hard delivering the Christmas Post. But when a snowstorm sweeps through Clover Leaf Wood, the animals must come together to make sure all the mail arrives on time.
The Little Angel Studios have once again turned their space into a gently immersive world of magic and merriment. For those who may be unfamiliar with this style of show, the best explanation is to describe it as stepping into the world of Beatrix Potter, with the story (and parcels) carried by friends both feathered and furred. Seating is arranged in rows with chairs and soft blocks facing the stage, and some mats on the floor at the front for those wanting to be a little closer to the action.
Aimed at ages 2-5, but with the whole family welcome to attend, Rosie Robin and the Christmas Post is the warmest Christmas show anyone will see this year. Making a fantastic return trip or first ever visit, the show really does cater for absolutely everyone. It is such a display of heartfelt love and light that an elderly couple could quite honestly go with no little ones in tow and still have the most wonderful afternoon reminiscing about the snowy-filled seasons both past and yet to come.
Lizzie Wort is the genius behind it all - having written the script (alongside Miranda Pitcher) and performing the entire play alone. The only other person visible to the audience is the lighting operator enacting Aaron Dootson’s sublime design, which offers a whole new breath of inspiration to the tale.
With credits very much due to the rest of the creative team, Keith Fredrick and Oliver Hymans have co-designed the most perfect puppets to take the audience on such a joyful journey, and Dominic Sales has composed a soundtrack so catchy yet calm, it is almost interwoven into the fabric of the script itself - you simply couldn’t imagine one without the other!
The show runs at approx. 45mins however there is a fully flexible readmittance policy for anyone that may struggle to sit for so long. It must be said, however, at the press performance full of ages from 0-50 everyone was so engaged with the constantly flowing visuals that there was very little disturbance. Many commercial children's shows could definitely take some notes from this approach as it is clearly so much more efficient and appropriate for the primary demographic.
Whilst being far less interactive than a pantomime, there are strong sensory elements to dazzle and delight, keeping a beautiful balance of tranquillity and liveliness in this seasonal sensation.
