Q & A with Robin Simpson

Starring in York Theatre Royal's Pantomime Aladdin

It’s finally Panto season! How have rehearsals been for Aladdin which opens on the 5th December at York Theatre Royal.

Lots of fun, as always. It’s a great script and we have a very talented cast.

Tell us all about your character, Dame Dolly.

She is Aladdin’s mum and runs the joke shop ‘Born to Pun’ in the shambles in York.

What is it you most enjoy about Pantomime?

The audiences, the unpredictability and the chaos.

Pantomime is no easy feat, with multiple performances over the festive period. How do you keep energised?.

You have to look after yourself. Don’t try to do too much in your spare time and eat well.

What is your favourite Panto routine in the show?

This year we are able to bring an audience member up onto the stage with us, that should be entertaining! They take part in a comedy routine!

Tell us about your journey into playing The Dame which you’ve done for a number of years in various productions.

I started several years ago at the LBT in Huddersfield and moved over to York in 2020. I’ve done a lot of work previously at York Theatre Royal.

How long does it take you to transform into character and do you design your own outfits?

It doesn’t take me long at all, just put me in front of the audience! The costumes are designed and made by either Evolution Productions or York Theatre Royal and they are brilliant!

What is your favourite tradition that isn’t Pantomime?

Christmas traditions are great. One of our weirdest traditions as a family is we have to go up a hill on New Years Eve and throw peanuts in the air, don’t ask!

Why should people come and see Aladdin this Christmas.?

It’s a fantastic, traditional show with a talented and funny cast, made with respect and love for our audiences.
