Operation Mincemeat

The current touring production of Operation Mincemeat proves that lightning really can strike twice. Already a phenomenon in the West End and on Broadway, this touring version captures the same irreverent energy, razor-sharp wit, and musical brilliance that made the show a global sensation.   Making a pit stop at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, it is top-secret levels of funny!

Based on the extraordinary true story of the Operation Mincemeat, the musical recounts the daring 1943 British intelligence plan to fool the Nazis by planting false invasion plans on a corpse disguised as a Royal Marine officer. The ruse successfully misled German forces and helped the Allies invade Sicily during World War II. What could have been a dense historical drama instead becomes a wildly inventive musical comedy packed with satire, heartfelt moments, and laugh-out-loud theatricality.

The musical itself has a remarkable history. Created by the British comedy collective SpitLip—made up of David Cumming, Felix Hagan, Natasha Hodgson, and Zoë Roberts—the show first premiered in a tiny 77-seat theatre at London’s New Diorama Theatre in 2019. Word of mouth quickly transformed the fringe production into a cult hit, leading to sold-out runs at Southwark Playhouse and Riverside Studios before transferring to the West End in 2023. Since then it has become one of the most acclaimed musicals of recent years, winning multiple awards including the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.

The touring cast delivers the material with astonishing skill. Christian Andrews, Seán Carey, Charlotte Hanna-Williams, Holly Sumpton, and Jamie-Rose Monk lead the company with electrifying versatility, seamlessly switching between dozens of characters with lightning-fast costume changes and impeccable comic timing.  There were many stand out moments from the quintet, especially the opening number of Act 2 which took everyone by surprise.  There felt like subtle nods to the musical theatre styles of Six and Hamilton within the show due to the fast-paced nature and song styling.

What makes this production so thrilling is its fearless theatricality. Five performers play a dizzying array of characters, the staging is brilliantly inventive, and the score jumps effortlessly between soaring ballads and absurdly catchy comic numbers. Beneath the humour, however, lies a surprising emotional depth that honours the real people behind the wartime story.

In short, the touring production of Operation Mincemeat is an absolute triumph: clever, heartfelt, and wildly entertaining. Whether you’re a history buff or a musical theatre fan, this production is proof that bold storytelling and brilliant performers can transform even the strangest historical tale into a five-star theatrical event and I'm adding another 5 stars to their already incredible marker of over 88 5-star reviews!
