Mind Mangler : Member of the Tragic Circle

Fast paced comedy, Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle, is the latest offering from Mischief Comedy, the global sensation behind The Play That Goes Wrong, The Goes Wrong Show and the Mischief Makers Podcast.

Everything about the show is reminiscent of the new wave of illusionists who flooded the small screen in the late 90s and early 2000s. The dramatic lighting and staging pays homage to ‘Breaking the Magicians Code’ and David Blaine’s most famous stunts, the ‘subliminal messaging’ and live go-pro shots a clear nod to mentalist Derren Brown and of course we have reference to Houdini too for good measure. Only The Mind Mangler isn’t quite so successful; with a life and act falling into equal levels of disarray.

We were in hysterics from the get-go; the gags just didn’t stop, from slapstick silliness to puns-a-plenty the comedy was relentless.

Henry Lewis’ was 100% believable as the failing illusionist. The character has depth beyond the ‘on-stage’ persona of The Mind Mangler, showing glimpses of vulnerability and portraying the descent into chaos. Combine this with Lewis’ improvability and you’re given a flawless and memorable performance.

Jonathan Sayer as the Stooge (Audience Member/Different Audience Member) is equally as impressive. His comedic timing was second to none, as was his ability to build rapport with the audience. Lewis and Sayer play off one another perfectly; you can see why their previous endeavours have been so long-lasting and successful!

Where the show really comes into its own is in the improv and, dare I say, audience participation. Like many I would usually be put off by audience participation but the audience at Hull New Theatre were the perfect bonus cast members with quips, stories and the ability to play along and laugh at ourselves. Lewis and Sayer have an exceptional ability when it comes to drawing out the best of an audience and getting, perhaps reluctant, individuals to join in.

Add to this impressive magic, which I genuinely have no idea how it was done and a triumphant finale, The Mind Mangler is a must see.

A unique combination of theatre, stand up and improv that you won’t want to miss, catch The Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle while you can at Hull New Theatre until Saturday 1st June. Get your tickets here: The Mind Mangler: Member of the Tragic Circle – Hull Theatres
