Jersey Boys

Twenty years on from first taking the world by storm, Jersey Boys is back on the road with its 20th Anniversary Tour, and it is every bit as entertaining as ever. Telling the incredible true story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, this much-loved musical serves up a generous helping of nostalgia, drama, humour and, of course, some of the most recognisable songs in music history.

The story follows four young men from New Jersey who, against the odds, rise from humble beginnings to become one of the most successful musical groups of their generation. From their early struggles and brushes with the wrong side of the law to the highs of international fame, the musical takes us behind the scenes of a remarkable journey. But, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that success doesn’t always come without a price, with friendship, loyalty, money and egos all playing their part.

What makes the storytelling particularly effective is the way the four members each take turns to narrate events from their own perspective. This gives the production a wonderful pace, with the cast delivering the dialogue with real conviction, ensuring that the audience remains invested in the story just as much as the music.

Leading the company as Frankie Valli is Luke Baker, who is nothing short of exceptional. Capturing both the character and the unmistakable sound of the legendary frontman, Baker demonstrates an impressive vocal range, slipping effortlessly into Valli’s infamous falsetto with remarkable ease. Whether delivering the softer, more soulful moments or hitting those soaring high notes, his performance is a real standout and a testament to his vocal ability.

However, this is very much a company effort, with the performances across the board being of an exceptionally high standard. The chemistry between the four leading men is evident throughout, but it is when they come together vocally that the production really comes into its own. The harmonies are fabulous, beautifully balanced and wonderfully reminiscent of the original Four Seasons sound.

And then, of course, there are the songs! With a catalogue that includes Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man, Beggin’, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You and the iconic December, 1963 (Oh, What a Night), there really is something for everyone. Each number brings its own energy, and the feel-good atmosphere in the auditorium is infectious. These are songs that have stood the test of time, and hearing them performed live is an absolute joy.

The production itself is equally impressive, with slick scene transitions keeping the action flowing seamlessly and ensuring there is never a dull moment. The staging is cleverly used, allowing the story to move effortlessly between locations and periods without interrupting the momentum.

Twenty years after its debut, Jersey Boys remains a shining example of what a great jukebox musical should be. With outstanding performances, superb harmonies, compelling storytelling and a soundtrack packed with timeless hits, this anniversary tour is a thoroughly deserved celebration of a musical theatre favourite.
