Here and Now - The Steps Musical

After a hugely successful premier at Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre in late 2024, the Steps musical Here and Now is back out on tour across the UK, currently stopping at Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre.

Set in the supermarket, Better Best Bargains, Here and Now tells the story of four friends who work there. With Caz approaching her 50th birthday, she suggests they make a pact to find their ‘happy ever after’, but then Caz’s husband leaves her, the supermarket closes and everything turns out wrong.

Will we ever see any happy ending here? Well, in the style of all good musicals, of course we do! But not before chart topping hits from Steps back catalogue takes us through all of the emotions.

Playing the leading role of Caz is Lara Denning, her vocal talents, as always, do not disappoint and she takes us through the story with a natural ease. Jacqui Dubois as Vel, Rosie Singha as Neeta and Blake Patrick Anderson as Robbie complete the group of friends. They have a great rapport between them and right from the start the audience want the best for these funny, likeable characters.

River Medway plays Jem and has a great musical number with Chain Reaction in Act 2 which gets the audience whooping and clapping with joy. Of course, the story would not be complete without a ‘baddy’ or in this case a ‘love rat’ and this role lands firmly with Edward Baker-Duly as Max, played magnificently enough to earn him boos in the curtain call.

Matt Cole’s choreography is superb and brings a cheeky, fun vibe to the classic pop numbers. Matt Spencer-Smith’s arrangements help to tell the story well as they are given new meaning within the text and hold some nicely poignant moments. Throw in Tom Rogers’ set design and Gabriella Slade’s costumes and you get a vibrant, feel good, foot stomping musical that’s a great evening out.

It’s a story of friendship, of doing the right thing, of not settling for second best and most importantly it’s a story about following your dreams and going for something, no matter how much it takes you out of your comfort zone because you only live once and the past shouldn’t stop you from living in the present.
