Ginger Johnson Blows Off

Ginger Johnson Blows Off is on a scale of 1 to 10 camp! (That's how numbers work). Supported by hilariously grumpy Jen, the UK’s Next Drag Superstar, Ginger Johnson is on a mission to become a daredevil now she has had her dream of winning drag race come true. Go watch Ginger tackle death (no drops) defying feats, sing live and have a captive audience in stitches.

Proving she is more than a comedy queen, Ginger Johnson effortlessly delivers acting, live vocals, daredevil stunts, and beautifully uncomfortable audience interaction. She is a natural performer who belongs on the stage. Tackling themes of imposter syndrome, self-doubt and confidence, this show is giving audiences the motivation to live your best life because it is your only one.

While some of the gags in “blowing off” ended up being fart jokes, which felt like the least intelligent choice, some of these were at least made into impressive stunts and only lasted for a short period. Joking about methane isn't mefave but it seemed some members of the audience enjoyed it, and thankfully none of the farts left a sour taste in this reviewer's mouth.

Joining Ginger on stage as head of Health and Safety was Jen. This actor was incredibly boring and dull and looked moody the entire time. I loved it. Jen was one of the campest things in this show and it involved a drag queen on a go-kart. Jen provided an impressive contrast to the harsh and loud Ginger, which created a stunning balance on the stage. Also, Jen helped bring on set pieces and move things around, which meant Ginger could continue to narrate, and the whole show kept moving.

Featuring a set that reminded me of a Britain's Got Talent audition, drag queen Ginger Johnson gets the golden buzzer for this stand-out comedy show. Having a minimal amount on stage highlighted how everything in this show was on the shoulders of Ginger and Jen. Thankfully, this 30-something queen likes shoulder pads and knows how to carry it well. This show is about watching what Ginger is going to come up with next and not what decoration is being carted around in the tour bus. That said, there is a very impressive set piece towards the end, but you’ll have to get a ticket to find out!

There was no still moment in the Soho Theatre throughout the show unless Ginger Johnson demanded it. These moments only came with tense anticipation as some of the daredevil stunts were being completed. Most of these stunts were genuinely impressive, and much skill, planning, and rehearsal had gone into them. It was outstanding not to know which would be a gag and which would gag the audience.

Ginger Johnson Blows Off is a powerhouse of Drag Cabaret entertainment with comedy, impressive stunts and high camp.
