Dick Whittington

The time is upon us once again to get in to that festive spirit, and what better way to do that then to take family and friends to a pantomime!

The Belgrade Theatre, Coventry take us to the rat-infested streets of London, along with Dick Whittington and his cat Tommy. Can Dick and Tommy defeat King Rat? What mess (quite literally speaking, it is panto), are Sarah the Cook and Idle Jack going to get themselves into this year? And what unwitting member of the audience is going to get roped in to the story too?

After seeing last years performance of Cinderella, we knew we would be in for a treat and the delightful costumes (design by James MacIver), fabulous set (design by Ian Westbrook) and impressive choreography (Jenny Phillips) certainly lived up to our expectations.

Iain Lauchlan returns as the Dame, Sarah the Cook, having spent the last 30 years gracing the Belgrade’s stage (as writer and director, also) its clear to see why audiences love him.

Lois Brook as Dick Whittington, makes her pantomime debut. With strong vocal and acting skills, it was nice to see a female taking on the lead male role, a nice shout to the tradition that has not been seen often in recent years.

Andy Hockley also returns, this year as King Rat and delivers his songs flawlessly, amidst boos from the audience, truly portraying a ‘love to hate’ panto villain.

The standout performance of the night must go to Sam Woods as Tommy the Cat. Showing sassy humour from the start, a great stage presence and a performer we want to see more from in the future.

Overall, this was a great evening’s entertainment, packed with great moments, and we highly recommend a visit for all ages to enjoy!
