When I first saw Come From Away in London's West End I wasn't really sure what to expect. What I got was a musical with a cracking score and more laughs than tears. It was a pleasant surprise and the tour certainly does not disappoint
The small cast of 12, who take on additional roles to their main characters, have a great energy from the beginning and maintain this throughout. It's clear to see that this ensemble piece works because everyone is just so focused, nothing skips a beat.
You're probably familiar with the background to this story, but it really is so much more. On 9/11 in 2011 as 7000 air passengers were grounded on a small island off Canada called Newfoundland, the community which had tripled in size in the space of a few hours opened its doors and it's hearts to people from all nations.
Including the first female American Airlines Captain, the mother of a New York firefighter and an eager local news reporter, fresh on her first day, are just some of the colourful characters we are privy too.
Amanda Henderson plays Beulah, the school teacher who shows compassion with a cheerful heart. Kirsty Hoiles as Diane and Daniel Crowder as Nick, have a beautifully innocent chemistry as the American/English couple who find love in the strangest of situations and Sara Poyzer as Beverley, delivers an astounding rendition of Me and the Sky.
The cast truly are incredible to watch and time passes so quickly, so absorbed are we with the events playing out and the attachment we have to these people. With a basic, but beautifully functional and aesthetically pleasing scenic design, (by Beowulf Boritt), musical staging by Kelly Devine and direction by Christopher Ashley and a superb sounding band, led by Andrew Corcoran, this really is one not to be missed.
It's a story of hope and where there is still hope there is always a solution. It doesn't matter where you come from, we all come from away.
Delightful, funny and captivating.
