With millions of views across platforms like Instagram and TikTok, Christopher Hall is as entertaining live as he is online! The social media sensation tells tales of his life as a ‘boy who’s a bit girly really’ and how, really, it’s better that way. From unhealthy obsessions with pop princesses, falling in line behind the High School Queen Bees, and gaining life lessons from the cast of ‘Bad Girls’ why wouldn’t everyone strive to be a bit more feminine?
As soon as Christopher enters the auditorium at the Leicester Square Theatre, you know you’re going to be in for a good time. He runs (slightly feral) through the audience, giving high-fives and waves to those on the aisles, and makes his way up to the stage as gracefully as one would imagine in a rather tight denim jumpsuit - which is in fact relevant and referenced throughout the show.
Act 1 consists mainly of audience work, with those in the front row particularly in the firing line as you might expect at a comedy gig, but unfortunately most of the attendees at this show shared one significant trait with our performer. Sky high anxiety. So you did at times feel almost sorry for the sweet group of friends that he kept coming back to, and you may begin to wonder if it’s crossing a line of discomfort but he does manage to redeem himself in full by putting himself in arguably more vulnerable positions as the night progresses. This also may not have felt quite so intense if the space was completely sold out or set in a larger venue, so you can’t quite mark it as a critique.
From his script it’s clear Chris is a very down to earth girlie*, and has a clear demographic in mind - one which his support act clearly got the memo for.
*not a gender description but a personality one
Amy Webber was absolutely fabulous (yes, a reference, and yes an apt one) and hit all the right marks needed to get us warmed up and giggling away. The addition of music, and such a spectrum of which we should note, was a great addition and set the tone perfectly. Although she may not be the next Britney Spears much, I’m sure, to her disappointment, it was upbeat, entertaining, and just FUN.
Chris came back after a short interval and was relatable, bouncy, bubbly (but not available as an ‘atmosphere invite’ for any weddings) and honest. He took an equal mix of lighthearted and more serious topics and found humour in them all without getting too deep or political - which felt much needed in today’s world. It felt very much like an easy and safe space in which to switch off and have a laugh for a few hours.
