Ceilidh
It's not often you come out of the theatre having hit your cardio workout target for the day but Ceilidh is a musical like no other!
Currently at the Shoreditch Town Hall, Ceilidh brings a beautiful Scottish tradition of a community dance to life with some beautifully poignant storytelling alongside it, it's not your usual night out at the theatre, in fact it's a whole lot better! As soon as you enter the venue you realise this is going to be something special, cast mingle around with audience members, then gather to play some tunes in the centre of what will become the dancefloor as people take their seats.
We're introduced to Ramsey who will be our caller and narrator of the evening. He wonderfully leads our feet in the dances and our hearts in the storytelling. Written by Scott Gilmour and Claire McKenzie, the story follows Ramsay (Gilmour himself), as he teaches us the history of Ceilidh dancing and the lore that has been passed generation to generation. The main themes are love, friendship, acceptance and belonging and you walk away feeling like you truly were part of something.
The music is infectious, several times the entire audience without prompting were stamping our feet and clapping our hands along to the bounce of the rhythm. There must be a mention of the 'duelling violins' moment which was rousing performed by Rori Hawthorn & Charlie West.
The entire cast are superb. They so wonderfully take you on the journey with them and their enthusiasm is infectious. Scott Gilmour is incredibly charismatic as our leader, Kirsty Findlay and David Rankine brings a warm joy to the family story.
Under the direction and choreography of Sam Pinkleton, the audience becomes part of the action being invited to take part in the dances with cast and strangers alike. At times it feels chaotic but that's part of the joy and the cast do brilliantly at controlling the crowd throughout.
The ending of the piece brings everyone together on a beautiful moment of joy and a group sing along. It wonderfully closes what is an evening filled of joy and celebration.
The finale is a particularly beautiful celebration, bringing everyone together in a way that perfectly captures the spirit of the evening. If anyone asks me what's the most fun production I've seen recently, I'll definitely be telling them to catch Ceilidh while they can!
