& Juliet is an exhilarating musical extravaganza that turns the classic tale of Romeo and Juliet on its head; presenting a bold, modern reimagining filled with infectious energy, wit, and heart. This vibrant production dares to ask: What if Juliet's story didn't end tragically? And the answer is a resounding, glorious celebration of second chances, empowerment, and the power of one’s own choice. Here, we join with Anne Hathaway (not that one) and William Shakespeare as they battle for the quill to reconfigure Juliet’s fate.
The musical score is a masterpiece, featuring an array of chart-topping hits from the legendary Max Martin. Bill Sherman’s musical supervision, orchestration and arrangements (with additions from Dominic Fallacaro) never miss a beat. Each song is cleverly woven into the narrative, elevating the story with the ear-worms of a time gone by. From heart-wrenching ballads to high-energy dance numbers, the choreography (from the genius mind of Jennifer Weber) is spectacular, flawlessly executed, and perfectly synchronised. Who knew that Shakespeare and Britney were the partnership the world was waiting for?
A show this extravagant needs a sturdy cast and, for the very most part, they rise to the challenge with creative courage and determination. X Factor winner, Matt Cardle, steps into the role of playwright, William Shakespeare and commands the stage with performance that grips hold of the powerhouse moments whilst also celebrating the subtler, gentler side to this characterisation. Geradine Sacdalan’s Juliet is sweeter than her predecessors’, with a naivety that lends itself fittingly to the well-known protagonist who, traditionally, met, married and died within but four days! Her portrayal builds in stamina and grit as the show progresses toward her roaring finale- which is pure musical theatre gold.
However, it is Lara Denning’s Anne Hathaway who seals the deal on this delight of a production. Perfect comic-timing, soaring vocals and charisma for days, Denning goes the extra mile to deliver a performance that could, frankly, carry the show on its own. Her simple yet goosepimple inducing delivery of pop-icon Celine Dion’s ‘That’s The Way It Is’ is the highlight of the show.
Visually, & Juliet is a feast for the eyes. Set (Soutra Gilmour) and video design (Andrzej Goulding) work harmoniously together and are innovative and dynamic, seamlessly transitioning from location to location whilst effectively enhancing narrative cohesion. Costuming is equally impressive, with Paloma Young’s designs combining contemporary fashion with Shakespearean flair, reflecting the show's unique blend of old and new.
The book, penned by David West Read, is witty and clever, full of sharp dialogue and modern sensibilities. The clever reimagining of Juliet's fate not only honours Shakespeare's original but also provides a refreshing take on female agency and empowerment. Direction by Luke Sheppard is well-honed and insightful, balancing humour, drama, and romance with finesse.
Tonight’s press event wasn’t without its stumbling blocks, however, Sheppard’s smooth direction allowed for the performance to continue after a brief interruption. Sadly, some of the production’s more spectacular moments were lost due to technical difficulties, but the show must go on! Thankfully, each and every creative element of this show is super strong meaning that, even when things go wrong, there is enough of a solid foundation for it to seem as though nothing ill at all happened.
Since its Manchester premiere in 2019, this show revolutionised what it means to be a jukebox musical. However, when an original production of a show not only raises the bar above its peers but obliterates the very phrase “five stars”, it’s easy to find any and every flaw in its new incarnation. You find yourself picking at the differences and wondering if the original experience has been cheapened in lieu of a cash grab. Yes, there are subtle changes but does this detract from what is arguably one of the most holistically great modern musicals? I think not. You certainly won’t find a better jukebox musical!
