1 Tent, 4 Girls

This is a crazy girls trip gone wrong story. It’s based around childhood friends Rosa (Alice Bebber), Ruby (Bethan Owen) and Sam (Ciara Hughes) who adventure into the Welsh hills for a weekend away from the concrete jungle of London in search of some kind of life affirming epiphany. Though of course what would a gal-pal comedy story be without some inevitable arguments, a problematic tent and of course some classic Welsh rain to top it all off. There is also an uninvited guest in the form of Lily (Evie Cooper) whose relationship with Ruby maybe isn’t as platonic as they made out to be, hilarity of course ensues.

The women led theatre company ‘Talkers and Doers’ all hail from Bristol, and this story is based loosely on a similar experience had by writer Rosalie Roger-Lacan and a very relatable story for any woman 25+ who has a small group of friends that maybe don’t always get along! There isn’t a huge amount of plot here, but with the piece only being an hour long it would be difficult to fit much more in and do it justice.

Each character is loud, large and strong, which does make for some difficulty in the argument scenes where dialogue crosses over and we lose some of the impact. Ciara Hughes is a standout as Sam, the instigator of the trip who is possibly having a quarter life crisis and doesn’t quite know how to connect with herself again. Ciara shows off some fantastic physical comedy skills, her facial expressions bringing laughs a plenty and adding to the comedy of the writing brilliantly.

Evie Cooper does a fantastic job of bringing the walking red flag that is Lily to life. She wonderfully portrays what is a very problematic character with a knowledge of comic timing and the ability to use her voice and body to really bring it to life.

All the actors work well together and they are believable as a friend group.  The piece feels very real and authentic thanks to their chemistry and a quartet. The writing from Amber Charlie Conroy and Rosalie Roger-Lacan is quick, witty and clever. It would be lovely to see this piece fleshed out a little and maybe have the relationships and history expanded upon so we gain more of an understanding around how the friendships formed.

This is a wonderful show to go and see with some gal-pals and laugh at this hilarious story of the craziest girls trip!
